Why an Encyclopedia
There are encyclopedias of Christianity, Judaism,
Islam, Buddhism, and Sikhism (the last two are in progress). But
Hinduism, which is one of the oldest of the world's traditions, has
hitherto not been encapsulated in encyclopedic form. The Encyclopedia of
Hinduism is meant to remedy this appalling omission.
Like any other encyclopedia on religion and
spirituality, this project is
of great significance not only to Hindus but to all humanity. We are
witnessing the gradual erosion of spiritual values and traditions;
therefore, it is vitally important that – for our children and for all
future generations – we do our best to preserve the valuable wisdom and
knowledge contained in Hindu heritage.
Despite the influence of Hinduism around the globe,
it is widely misunderstood in the Western hemisphere. This Encyclopedia
seeks to provide a better understanding of the Hindu traditions and to
deepen inter-cultural dialogue.
Thus, the Encyclopedia of
Hinduism will be a most valuable source
book for understanding the indigenous traditions and culture of India,
which is so essential at a time when each nation must find its own
unique response to the historical challenge of articulating a world
culture. Beyond this, it will be of inestimable value to all whose
efforts are aimed at removing intercultural misunderstandings so that
Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Moslems, and members of
other religious traditions can together create a more peaceful, tolerant
and joyous world.
