Left: Pujya Swami Chidanandji maharaj (Muniji), Pujya Sant Dada J.P. Vaswani and H.H. The Dalai lama light the holy lamp to inaugurate the Clean, Green and Serene Movement of Varanasi.

Right: Pujya Swamiji speaks about the Varanasi "Clean, Green and Serene" Program as the first step toward a Clean India. Educated India and healthy India.

In this urgent and noble program, IHRF – with the cooperation of Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh pledges to clean up the holy banks of our Mother Ganga. Although we worship Her as mother, we throw our trash in her waters and on her ghats. We pollute the pathways running beside her current. Additionally, the market place and roads of Swargashram, which literally means, "heavenly abode" have become filled with plastic bags and other rubbish.

In order to immediately remedy this situation and restore Mother Ganga to her rightful state of sublime beauty, we have instituted a "Clean, Green and Serene" program with the cooperation of Parmarth Niketan Ashram (the largest institution in Rishikesh, of which Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji is the President).

Twice a day, trash is removed from the ghats, from the market place and from the banks and taken to a dumping site. For this purpose, we have purchased a special tractor/tempo with garbage trolley to transport all the rubbish from the entire Swargashram area to a dumping site. At the dumping site, Polythene bags and other "recyclables" will be separated from other rubbish.

In order to maintain the cleanliness and to involve all those who inhabit the area in this program, we have also purchased 25 large trash bins to be placed up and down the market and along the banks of Ganga. In this way, we can keep Her holy banks clean and divine.

Twenty-five of these bins have been placed up and down the market place the roads and along the banks of Mother Ganga.
