Children from the slums of Gurgaon - part of IHRF's work in conjunction
with Project Prakash. |

Left: In December, 1997 these
children's school was merely a shack with neither light nor ventilation
nor supplies.
Right: In December, 1998, a new structure had been built allowing
for light and ventilation, and the children had new mats to sit
on, new uniforms and new school supplies. |

Additional YES Schools
The YES program currently includes over 30 schools,
run in impoverished areas of the Himalayas. The children in these
schools are given supplies (books, copy books, pens, pencils, etc.)
uniforms, shoes and sweaters free of cost. There is no charge to
any child for attending a YES school. However, these children are
given more than an academic education. They are also inculcated
with essential values, ethics and sanskaras, as well as with the
priceless gifts of hope.

| In our recent visit to this slum
outside of Delhi, it was beautifully apparent how much change had
occurred. School buildings that previously had neither light nor
ventilation have been re-done with the addition of windows, fans,
open doors etc. Roofed structures now hold classes that previously
had been outside; thus children can now continue to attend school
in the rainy season and in the cold of winter. children who used
to sit in the dirt beneath a makeshift shack now sit on new mats
in a brand new structure. children who had no paper or pens with
which to write now have new notebooks, pens and pencils.
Additionally, children all now have uniforms as
well as sweaters and shoes for the winter.
Our Gurgaon typing center now has six English
typewrites, as well as Hindi typewriters. The students come in one-hour
shifts to learn both typing and basic english.
We have just opened our 11th school in gurgaon;
with your continued generosity we can bring education and hope to
this destitute, forgotten land.

In December, 1997, this school
took place outside, simply in a backyard under the trees. By December,
1998, an actual structure – with walls and a roof – had been
built and the children had a plethora of new supplies, mats, uniforms,
etc. |
